Who is the idiot that coined the title of "terrible two"? Did he become so overwhelmed and frustrated that the child was given into care before he reached the ridiculous age of three?
If I track this genious down, I will lie flailing face down on the floor, drooling and screaming until I get my way and get this misperception cleared up. The terrible twos are merely a warm-up exercise for what's on the cirriculum for stage "three" of child rearing.

I have often said that three year olds are WAY more difficult than two year olds! (and I still haven't had my OWN toddler yet!)
how about a daughter who had her first lie down flat on the face kicking and screaming temper tantrum at the age of 10 months? Now try to imagine what she was like at 2.... thankfully she is a delightful 7 year old.
Celena- yes, thank you for seeing the wretched truth. I say that God sends them as irresistable babies so that by the time they morph into screechers its too late- we already love them endlessly!
ykherd- I'm so sorry. You got only 10 months of gorgeous baby before the tribulations came. How was she at 3?
I'm with you sister. I'd take a mean 2 year old over a "easy" 3 year old any day.
I am in total agreement with you all...everyone told us about the terrible twos and our kids hit two and it wasn't that terrible, but almost to the day they hit three, oh my goodness...like Christy said, I too would take a really mean two year old day over any "easy" three year old day!
My older son, who's always been remarkably mature for his age (and is now 6' tall at 13!) started going through the terrible twos at 20 months (I remember the day well...) and was done with them by age three, so when my younger son never went through them I thought I was home free -- until he turned three. Being extremely high energy (couldn't keep him in a stroller once he started walking at under 10 months!) I was in hell. But little did I know that there was age four (for my older son) and five (for my younger son) still to negotiate.
