Summer

"Hi. I'm Sam. Remember?"

I guess its true what those blue-haired ladies in Safeway used to say.... "They grow up so fast..." At the time I wanted to shove my screaming, mangey crew at blue-grandma and say; "Oh, yeah?! Well how about you take them for an hour so I can shop? Or a week, if it goes as fast as you say, you romantic old biddy." But I'd twist my features into an imitation of a grateful smile and pat them on the arm instead. (Dementia. Odd what memories it melts away...)

Well, its been thirteen short years of parenting now, and we just realized yesterday that we've done a week of activities with practically no tension. No meltdowns. No peeing of the pants. No packing the stroller. None of it.

And we even had fun!

The summer list of good intentions has a few tick marks on it now. Zoo? check. Folk Fest? check. Beach? check. Fishing? check. Picking strawberries and raspberries? check. Tinkertown? check.

Maybe I'm growing over-confident here, but with this successful unfolding of events so far this summer, it seems a good weekend to take the girls and their friends on a camping trip to Birds Hill. With temperatures in the mid-thirties. In a tent. With precious few shade trees.

Where's that blue-haired lady when you need her?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - it does happen there is a day where they won't fight constantly?

I had a lady in the thrift store say those exact words to me yesterday. I just smiled - tight - but a smile.

So glad to hear that your summer is going so well! My hubbie is off now for 3 weeks so we're hoping to do some stuff with our 3. Hope we're as lucky as you!

I'm glad it's going so well. Your kids are great and so much fun! We haven't made it to Tinkertown yet but we're waiting until after the heat wave. Mommy doesn't do heat unless it's in China and I have to.

Camping?!?!?!?
I am thinking that the over-confidence might bite you in the ass by Monday. Good luck with that!
Stay hydrated.

I wish I had planned ahead and made arrangements to spend the summer with y'all...up until the camping part. My reply to the blue haired ladies used to be 'not soon enough for me thank you'...I used to drive my friends crazy counting the days when my daughter could hold her own bottle ;)

Life is oh, so sweet on the blue-haired side!

I guess if it's a clever comeback you are looking for, you could respond to comments like that with this:

'Yes, I know they grow so fast. But, we all age at the same rate which means that by the time my children have grown, you will more than likely be dead. Still want to go there?'

Roselle is my Mother in law and she told me to read your blog and that you're hilarious.

I can't wait for the day where I can go on holidays with the kids.

Sounds like a fun summer!! I only recently have been all to happy when I hear baby's crying in the mall or see parents pulling out the stollers from the trunk. All I say is "I'm glad that's not me!"
