Getting Lucky

Spent some time mall-hounding and picked
up a few things.

I had enough savings to buy the couch without a
payment plan.

Also on special were vintage Christmas bulbs, a
little stool with a worn stencil of Little Bo Peep,

an April Cornell wool sweater in fall colours, some

sewing trims and vintage dress patterns. On the way

out, I picked up a zucchini and a butternut squash.

Total spent: $11.25

You'd be upset, wouldn't you, if I came home today with a single solitary bottle of wine that cost twice as much as you spent on all of that stuff?

I need to find a beer and wine thrift store.

Huh? The couch was part of the $11? You MUST tell me where you're doing your shopping, 'cause my couch is falling apart and I need an affordable one after buying a new monitor!

Brian, what you need is an affordable therapist....

Heather- yes. yes. yes.
If you look at the couch closely, you will see that it is being held up by four cans of yellow brand tuna. I found the couch behind the local thrift shop, legs amputated, and theorized that it was headed for the dump. I knocked on the door and was told that for $5.00 it was mine. What I want to know is, if they were going to pay some guy to bring it to the dump, why did they GOUGE me for five HUNDRED CENTS?
usually used couches are of the unbelievably ugly, and piss-stained variety, but this time, I got really lucky.
I'll keep my eye out for you.
It'll give me an excuse to keep going to the mall....

It really is standing on tuna cans. How do you think of these things?

My Mum had a shop in the early 70s which sold knitting and sewing patterns. She had boxes and boxes of them. I bet she threw them all out when she moved house earlier this year ( everything went to the skip - even all her winter sweaters as she has jusr discovered now the weather is starting to turn). If any survived, I'll try and scrounge them for you and then Brian can use the cash towards that wine x

Sounds like a good reason to go thrift shopping - so you can afford good wine now and then! Or good ice cream.

Thanks Joyce. I get most of my wardrobe at thrift stores, but I'm rarely lucky when it comes to good furniture.

Hey, I have that sweater! Mine was pilfered from my sister's closet though, a good deal too. Maybe I should check my pile and make sure my husband didn't send it to the thrift store accidently.
Joyce, I've been lurking around your writing for awhile and I've been too shy to step forward. How bad is that? I wanted to tell you that I appreciate you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
I found your blog through Alice at school (Brian's school). Alice said you're my kind of people and, as usual, she's right! I'd like to introduce myself better to you sometime. If you'd like, you can email me privately at oneredthread@hotmail.com
There... guilty lurker is no longer anonymous, regardless of what my "blogger identity" says.
Take care,
Heather

Oh! I LOVE everything you bought!!

We have two thrift stores close by that still have excellent prices.

One of them has a washer and dryer in the back. That thought comforts me some.

I've thought of buying old wooden salad bowls to turn my couches squared legs into 'bun' feet.

It MIGHT work.

my earlier comment got eaten.
1. i would never be angry with my husband for bringing home a bottle of wine. even at twice the price of a couch.
2. my "wine thrift store" is my dad. home brewer extraordinaire.
3. i think my house would drive you crazy. it needs to be filled. i've spent a year getting rid of stuff and have just a few things to go. (but i need a trailer and a few strong young men.) it is 100 years old and huge. it's like a vacuum. it even echoes. i've heard that nature abhors a vacuum, and i have a feeling you do, too. anyway, have a great weekend. enjoy that bottle of wine. and the comedy thing.

I just showed this post to some of my students, and Robert, regarding the couch/tuna cans idea, wants me to tell you that you have a good brain.

You are a discount goddess. Please come out west and give seminars. I'll trade art for tuition.

You must tell us which thrift store you shop at! I never have such luck. An April Cornell sweater, what a find. And...by paying only $11.00 for all that stuff that must be worth at least$700.00, you've saved $689.00. You can afford a bottle of wine AND some beer.

well now, if I give away ALL my secrets, then what will I have left, really?
I love all these reactions, it takes some of the sting out of being a compulsive shopper. Okay, the secret is not WHERE you shop, but how often you scrounge through.I also find that the ones in little towns are often the best. Key words though: Compulsive, and Scrounge.

did ya get that?!
And yes, my house is cluttered. Do you want to make something of it? After a glass of overpriced wine, everything starts to look very pretty.....

I think I like Linda. She is truly a real deep thinker.

oh joyce my dear sister, only you could spend so little and get so much. Of course, as you know, I don't have the patience for thrift stores, but alas I find happiness in "other" stores -- retail therapy -- how lovely it truly is!
